If you smell gas, leave the building and call 911 or your gas utility from outside before anything else. Once it is safe, Royal Flush Affordable Plumbing finds the leak, repairs or replaces the damaged piping or connector, and pressure tests the line before it goes back into service.

Signs you need this

Six signs your gas line needs attention.

The first one is an emergency. The others are the quieter warnings that a licensed plumber should look at soon.

The smell of rotten eggs

Gas is given that smell on purpose. Leave the building, do not touch switches, and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Do not go back in to look for the cause.

A hissing sound near a pipe or appliance

Hissing at a joint, valve or connector is gas escaping under pressure. Treat it the same way as a smell of gas.

Dead plants or bubbling wet ground over a buried line

A patch of dead grass, or bubbles in standing water along the line from the meter, can mean a leak in the buried pipe.

A gas bill that jumped for no clear reason

Same habits, same weather, much higher use. A slow leak is one cause that is worth ruling out.

Rusted, flaking or damaged pipe and fittings

Corrosion at joints, pipe that has been hit or has shifted with the slab, or a connector that is kinked, cracked or very old.

Work nearby, a storm or a flood

Digging, a fence post, a fallen tree or water in the utility area can damage piping. Appliances and valves that were under water should be checked before use.

Repair or replace, honestly

Some gas pipe can be repaired. Some should simply be replaced.

A leaking fitting or valve is usually a repair. A section of pipe that is rusted through, a run that has been damaged by digging, or a flexible connector that has aged out is a replacement, and replacing it is the safer answer. We tell you which it is and why, with the price for the right fix before the work begins.

One thing worth knowing: in most places the gas utility looks after the line up to and including the meter, and the piping after the meter belongs to the property owner. If you are not sure where the leak is, call the utility first. For anything on your side of the meter, call us and a licensed plumber will take it from there.

  • Safe to leave, safe to returnWe do not leave a repaired line until it has been pressure tested and every joint checked.
  • Old connectors swapped for newA flexible connector is never reused. A new one goes in with every appliance reconnection.
  • Licensed workTexas Responsible Master Plumber License RMPL #42403, printed on every invoice.
How we fix it

A gas line repair, start to finish.

Safety comes first, so the order matters.

Smell gas right now?

Do not call us first. Leave the building, leave the door open, and do not use switches, lighters or a phone inside. Call 911 or your gas utility from outside. When the utility says it is safe, call us for the repair.

  1. 1
    Step 1

The building is made safe first

If gas was smelled, the utility or fire department makes it safe. We start once it is safe to work.

  2. 2
    Step 2

    We find the source

We check the appliance connections, valves and accessible joints, and pressure test the line to see whether and where it loses pressure.

  3. 3
    Step 3

We quote the right fix, then make it

A fitting or valve repaired, a damaged section replaced, or an aged connector swapped. You approve the price before work starts.

  4. 4
    Step 4

We retest and walk you through it

The repaired line is tested again, the joints are checked for leaks, and we show you where the shutoff is. If a permit or inspection applies, we explain it.

What affects the price

What moves the price of a gas line repair.

A tightened fitting and a replaced buried line are very different jobs. We price once we have found the problem.

Where the leak is

An exposed valve or connector is quick to reach. A joint inside a wall, under a slab or in a buried run takes more work to get to.

How much pipe has to be replaced

A single fitting is a small repair. A corroded run, or a line that was not built to code, may be better replaced as a whole.

Access

Open attic, crawl space and yard are simple. Finished walls, slabs, patios and landscaping add work and restoration.

Permit and inspection

Replacing or altering gas piping normally needs a permit and inspection. What that involves depends on your city or county.

Appliances on the line

Reconnecting a range, dryer or water heater means new connectors and a leak check on each one.

Ask a plumber: 281-612-1015
01Is a small gas leak dangerous?
Treat every gas leak as an emergency, however small it seems. Leave the building, do not touch switches or use a phone inside, and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Do not try to find the leak yourself.
02Who repairs the line, the gas utility or a plumber?
In most places the utility looks after its service line up to and including the meter, and the piping after the meter is the property owner responsibility. The utility will tell you which side the problem is on. For anything after the meter, a licensed plumber like Royal Flush Affordable Plumbing does the repair.
03Can you replace an old flexible gas connector?
Yes, and it is worth doing whenever an appliance is moved or replaced, or when a connector is old, kinked or corroded. The new connector is the right size and rating for the appliance, and the connection is leak checked.
04My gas appliances were under water in a flood. What now?
Do not use them. Gas appliances, valves and controls that have been under water should be inspected before they are used again, and the utility should be told. Call us for the piping and shutoffs, and an appliance technician for the appliances themselves.
05Do you repair gas appliances?
We repair and replace the gas piping, valves and connectors, and hook appliances up. If the appliance itself is faulty, such as a burner or a control board, that is a job for an appliance technician or the manufacturer. We will tell you which side the fault is on.
