Keep irrigation and building water from flowing backward.

Signs you need this

Six signs it needs attention.

A backflow assembly sits quietly for years, then something changes. These are the situations we are called for.

Water coming from the assembly

Water spraying, running or dripping from the device or its relief port when nothing is using water means a part has failed or the unit is leaking.

A failed test or a notice

A failed annual test, or a letter from your water provider, means the assembly has to be repaired or replaced and then tested again.

Cracks after a cold snap

Water left inside an unprotected assembly can freeze and crack the brass body. Houston freezes are rare, which is why the pipes are so often left bare.

Damaged piping around it

Cracked pipe, a leaking union or a loose support at the assembly can look like a device problem. The pipe and the device are checked together.

An assembly that was never set up well

No shutoff valves, too low to the ground, no room to reach it, or fitted on bare pipe. We rework the installation so it can be used and tested.

No assembly where one is needed

Irrigation systems and many commercial connections need one. If yours has none, we can install it. Ask your water provider what it requires.

Done properly at the wall

The assembly is only as good as the pipe around it.

A backflow preventer does one job: it keeps water from your property from running backward into the public supply. For that to work, the device has to be the right type and size, fitted with shutoff valves on both sides, supported so it is not hanging on its pipes, and set where someone can reach it to test it.

We install a new assembly or replace a failed one, rebuild the pipes around it, and wrap the exposed pipe so it is protected from cold. Annual testing needs a special license and is done by a certified tester; we install, replace and repair, and we will tell you plainly what your assembly needs before any work begins.

  • Install and replaceA new assembly sized and set for the connection, with shutoff valves on both sides.
  • Re-pipe and insulateNew pipe and supports around the assembly, with exposed pipe wrapped against cold.
  • Protect the supplyThe goal is the same every time: your water stays on your side of the device.
How we fix it

A backflow job, start to finish.

Built so the owner, the property manager and the water provider each get what they need.

  1. 1
    Step 1

You tell us what you see

The address, the type of connection (irrigation, building, fire line), and what the assembly is doing. A photo helps.

  2. 2
    Step 2

We look at it and give you one price

We check the assembly, the pipes and the supports, explain what has failed, and agree the price with you before anything starts.

  3. 3
    Step 3

    We repair, replace or install

The assembly is repaired or replaced, the piping rebuilt where needed, and exposed pipe wrapped for cold.

  4. 4
    Step 4

You get the paperwork you need

If your water provider requires a test report, a certified tester completes it. We tell you in advance what is needed, so nothing is missed.

What affects the price

What moves the price of a backflow job.

We price every job upfront. These are the things that decide the number.

Type and size of the assembly

A small irrigation assembly and a large building assembly are very different devices, with different parts.

What has actually failed

A leaking fitting, a worn part and a cracked body lead to different repairs, and we tell you which one you have.

The piping and supports around it

Cracked pipe, old unions and missing supports add work, and are best fixed while the assembly is open.

Where it is and how we reach it

An assembly on a wall is simpler than one that is buried, in a pit, or behind a fence.

Cold protection

Wrapping the pipe, or fitting an insulated cover, is a choice that depends on the location and what you want protected.

Backflow Preventer Installation and Repair FAQs

Backflow preventer questions, answered.

Still not sure? Call and describe the problem. We’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a 20-minute fix or a job worth quoting.

Ask a plumber: 281-612-1015
01What does a backflow preventer do?
It stops water from flowing backward into the public water supply. If the pressure in the supply drops, water from an irrigation system or a building could otherwise be pulled back into it. The assembly closes check valves to prevent that.
02Does my irrigation system need a backflow preventer?
Most do, and so do many commercial connections. The rules depend on your city and water provider, so ask them what applies, or send us the details and we will help you work out what is needed.
03Why is water coming out of my backflow preventer?
A reduced pressure assembly has a relief port that opens when something is wrong, such as a fouled check valve or a pressure change, and some assemblies release a little water in certain conditions. A steady or repeated discharge is not normal. Shut the valves on either side of the assembly and call us.
04Do you test backflow assemblies?
No. Annual testing needs a special license and is done by certified testers. We install, replace and repair backflow assemblies and the piping around them, and tell you what yours needs. Your water provider can tell you who is approved to test in your area, and our guide to backflow testing explains how the test works and what to keep on file.
05Can a backflow preventer be protected from freezing?
Yes. Exposed pipe can be wrapped, and an assembly can be fitted with an insulated cover where that suits the location. Draining the irrigation line before a hard freeze also helps. Houston freezes are rare but they do happen.
