The line from the meter to the house is the one you never see leak.

The main water line runs underground from the city meter to your house. When it leaks you get a high water bill, a soft patch of lawn, or low pressure everywhere, and no puddle to point at. Royal Flush Affordable Plumbing locates the leak, repairs the section or replaces the run, and gets the yard back the way it was.

Signs you need this

Signs the main line is leaking underground.

There is rarely a visible leak. These are what you see instead.

A water bill that jumped

A main line leak runs 24 hours a day. The bill is often the first sign.

A wet or lush strip across the lawn

Water follows the line. The grass over it grows greener, then the soil goes soft.

Low pressure at every fixture

A leak before the house starves everything behind it at once.

The meter turns with everything off

Shut every fixture, watch the meter. If it moves, water is leaving somewhere between the meter and the house.

Water at the meter box

A wet or flooded meter box with the house off points to the service line.

Water at the foundation

Where the line enters the house, a leak can show as damp at the slab edge or in a garage wall.

What we actually do

Locate, expose, repair or replace.

We confirm the leak is in the service line with a meter test and locate it with listening equipment and line tracing, so the dig is at the leak and not along the whole run. A failed section is cut out and replaced. A line that is leaking in several places, or an old galvanized or polybutylene line, is replaced end to end.

A new line gets a proper shutoff valve at the house, which many older Houston homes never had, and the trench is compacted and the lawn restored.

  • Located, not guessedListening gear and line tracing put the dig at the leak.
  • A real shutoff at the houseEvery replacement gets a full-port valve you can reach.
  • Tested and restoredPressure tested before backfill, trench compacted, lawn put back.

What affects the price

What moves the price on a water line.

Upfront, from a site visit. The variables:

Repair or replace

One leak in sound pipe is a spot repair. Old galvanized or a line with several leaks is a replacement.

Length and depth

The run from the meter to the house, and how deep it sits.

What is on top

Lawn is simple. A driveway or walkway over the line adds restoration.

A new shutoff

Included on replacements; an option on repairs if the house has none.

The estimate is free

The site visit and quote cost nothing.

Water Line Repair FAQs

Water line questions we hear every week.

Still not sure? Call and describe the problem. We’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a 20-minute fix or a job worth quoting.

Ask a plumber: 281-612-1015
01How do I check for a main line leak myself?
Turn off every fixture and appliance, then watch the water meter. If the dial or leak indicator moves, water is leaving between the meter and the house. If it does not, the leak is inside.
02Who is responsible for the line, me or the city?
In Houston the city owns the meter and the line up to it. The service line from the meter to the house is the homeowner's.
03Will you dig up the whole yard?
No. The leak is located first, so a repair dig is a small area. A full replacement is a trench along the route, compacted and restored when done.
04What pipe do you use for a new water line?
Usually PEX or copper, depending on the run and your preference. Both are rated for direct burial. We explain the choice with the quote.
05My pressure is low but the bill is normal. Is it the line?
Possibly a partly closed or failing valve, a clogged pressure regulator, or scale in old galvanized pipe rather than a leak. We check the simple things first.
