A water softener plumbed in so it works and never leaks.

Scale on the faucets, a film on the glassware, a water heater that rumbles. A softener fixes the water, and the plumbing around it fixes the install: bypass valve, correctly sized pipe, a drain with an air gap and insulation where it sits outside. Royal Flush Affordable Plumbing installs softeners indoors and out.

Signs you need this

Six signs a softener would help.

These come from hard water, meaning dissolved minerals that leave scale behind as the water dries or heats up.

White crust on faucets and showerheads

Scale builds up where water dries and clogs aerators and spray holes over time.

Spots and a film on glassware

Dishes come out of the dishwasher cloudy even with rinse aid.

A film on shower glass and tile

Soap scum that comes back within days of cleaning, and shower doors that never look clear.

A rumbling or noisy water heater

Scale collects at the bottom of a tank heater and insulates the water from the burner or elements.

Appliances that need descaling

Coffee makers, kettles and washing machines that scale up faster than they should.

Water pressure that drifts down

Scale narrowing pipe, valves and fixture inlets reduces flow over the years.

Indoors or outdoors

Where it goes decides how it is plumbed.

A softener belongs on the line where water enters the house, after the main shutoff and before the water heater. In Houston that is often a garage, a utility closet or the side of the house. We look at where the water comes in, where a drain and a power outlet are within reach, and where you can get a bag of salt to the tank without a struggle.

Indoors, the unit is protected from sun and weather. Outdoors, the pipes are insulated and the equipment is set on a level base. Either way the install has isolation valves and a bypass, so the house keeps water when the system is serviced, and outdoor taps and sprinklers can stay on untreated water if you prefer.

  • A bypass on every installIsolation valves and a bypass, so you are never without water while the unit is serviced.
  • Drain with an air gapThe water the softener flushes goes to a proper drain, never into a bucket or onto the ground.
  • Outdoor taps your choiceSprinklers and hose bibbs can stay on untreated water to save salt.
How we fix it

A softener install, start to finish.

A standard install in an accessible spot is a single visit.

Not sure you need one?

A softener only helps with hardness. If your problem is grit, taste or smell, a filter is the answer. Tell us what the water is doing and we will say which one fits, before you buy anything.

  1. 1
    Step 1

We choose the location and route

Where the water enters, where the drain and power are, and how to reach the tank for salt. We check the pipe material at the connection point.

  2. 2
    Step 2

We cut in valves and a bypass

The water is shut off, isolation valves and a bypass are fitted in the main line, and the pipe is connected to the unit with the right fittings.

  3. 3
    Step 3

We mount the unit and run the drain

The unit is set level and secured, the drain is connected with an air gap, and it is plugged in. Outdoor pipe is insulated.

  4. 4
    Step 4

We start it up, test and show you

Water is run through, the connections are checked for leaks, the control is set to the manufacturer instructions, and you are shown the bypass and the salt fill.

What affects the price

What moves the price of a softener install.

We price the installation after we see where it goes, and you approve the price before work starts. The equipment itself is separate.

Location and pipe run

A unit beside the main is a short job. Running pipe across a garage or around a corner adds work.

Pipe material at the connection

Copper, PEX and CPVC are connected with different fittings.

Drain access

A nearby standpipe or drain is simple. If there is none, one has to be added.

Power and protection

A nearby outlet is needed. Outdoors, the unit also needs a level base and insulated pipe.

Replacing an old unit

Disconnecting and removing an existing softener and correcting its old plumbing before the new one goes in.

Ask a plumber: 281-612-1015
01Do water softeners need salt?
Salt-based softeners do. The brine tank holds salt, and the unit uses it to refresh the resin that traps hardness minerals. Adding a bag of salt every so often is part of owning one. We place the tank where it is easy to reach.
02How long does a softener installation take?
A standard install in an accessible spot is a one-visit job. Relocating pipe, adding a drain or working in a tight space adds time. We tell you what to expect when we price the work.
03Will a softener lower my water pressure?
A correctly sized softener on correctly sized pipe should not make a noticeable difference. Pressure drops usually come from undersized fittings or pipe, which is why the plumbing around the unit matters as much as the unit.
04Can you install a softener I bought online?
Yes. Send us a photo of the box or the label before the visit so we can check what it needs. We bring the valves and fittings to connect it properly.
05Do you remove my old softener?
We disconnect the old unit and connect the new one, and we correct any plumbing around it that was done poorly. Tell us if you want the old unit taken away.
