First the water is stopped: the cold inlet valve on top of the tank is closed, and the gas control turned off or the breaker switched off. Then the technician finds the source. A fitting, a flex line, a relief valve or a drain valve is replaced from the parts on the truck and the heater is back in service within the hour. A tank leaking from the body is drained and, if you approve the replacement quote, a new unit is installed the same visit where one is on the truck or in stock, with a new pan, shutoff and supply lines.
