Every tap is dry. Here is what that means, and who to call.

A house with no water is either a utility outage, a failed main valve, a burst yard line, or a pressure regulator that has given up. Royal Flush Affordable Plumbing tells you which on the phone when it can, and when it cannot, sends a truck 24 hours a day Sunday to Friday to find out and fix it, with the price agreed before any work.

Get the water back on

Tell us the symptom. A plumber calls back with a price range, not a call center.

Signs you need this

Five reasons a house loses water, and the one-minute checks.

Before you call, these checks tell you and us where the problem is.

A utility outage or main break

Ask a neighbor or check the utility's outage map. If the street is dry, it is the city's line and the plumber cannot help until it is back.

The meter valve or main valve was closed

A utility worker, a contractor or a family member closed it. Check the meter box at the street and the main where the line enters the house.

A burst yard line

Water pooling near the meter or the foundation, a soft strip of lawn, or the meter spinning with the house main closed. The line between the meter and the house has failed.

A failed pressure regulator

The valve near the main that steps street pressure down for the house. When it fails closed, the house goes dry or to a trickle with the street pressure fine.

A frozen line

In a freeze, the yard line or an exposed main can freeze solid. Water returns when it thaws, unless it split, in which case it returns as a leak.

A single fixture dry, not the house

If only one tap is dry, the fixture's own shutoff is closed or its cartridge is blocked with scale. That is a faucet repair, not an emergency.

What the emergency visit covers

Meter to house, checked in order until the water is back.

The technician starts at the meter: is the utility delivering water, is the meter valve open, is the meter moving with the house main closed. Then the main valve and the pressure regulator at the house. A seized or failed main valve is replaced with a quarter-turn ball valve; a failed regulator is replaced and set to the right pressure. A burst yard line is located, exposed and repaired or, if the line is old galvanized or thin copper with more than one failure, replaced from the meter to the house in one run.

Once water is flowing, every fixture is opened to purge air and sediment, and the water heater is checked, because a heater that ran dry needs care before it is turned back on.

  • Checked in orderUtility, meter, main valve, regulator, yard line. No guessing, no digging until the cause is known.
  • Valve or regulator replaced on the spotBoth are stocked on the truck and installed in the same visit.
  • Purged and testedAir and sediment flushed from every fixture, the heater checked, pressure confirmed before we leave.
How we fix it

A no-water call, start to finish.

A few checks by phone, then a structured visit.

Before you call

Ask a neighbor whether they have water. Look in the meter box for the valve position and for water. Check whether only one fixture is dry. Then call 281-612-1015 with what you found.

Call 281-612-1015
  1. 1
    Right away

You tell us what you found

Neighbors with or without water, the meter box, the main valve. Often that tells us the cause before the truck leaves.

  2. 2
    On the way

    A stocked truck is dispatched

With a main valve, a regulator and yard line fittings on board. We call before we arrive.

  3. 3
    Before any work

    Cause found and priced

From the meter to the house, checked in order. You get the full price for the repair before anything starts.

  4. 4
    Same visit

    Repaired, purged, tested

Water back on, every fixture flushed, pressure confirmed, the heater checked.

What affects the price

What moves the price when the house has no water.

Agreed before any work. These are the variables.

A valve or a regulator

Replacing a seized main valve or a failed regulator is a short job with stocked parts.

A yard line repair

A single break in the service line is exposed and repaired. The depth and what is on top of it (lawn, driveway, flower beds) set the time.

A yard line replacement

Old galvanized or thin copper with repeated failures is replaced from the meter to the house in one run, which is quoted after the line is located.

A freeze

A frozen line that has not split returns on its own; one that split is a repair. We can tell you which once it thaws.

No Water in the House FAQs

No-water questions from Houston homeowners.

Still not sure? Call and describe the problem. We’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a 20-minute fix or a job worth quoting.

Ask a plumber: 281-612-1015
01Why do I suddenly have no water in my house?
The usual causes, in order: a utility outage or main break on the street, a closed meter or main valve, a burst service line between the meter and the house, or a failed pressure regulator. A frozen line in winter is the fifth. Check with a neighbor first; if they have water, the problem is on your property.
02How do I check whether it is the city or my house?
Ask a neighbor, or check the utility's outage information. Then open the meter box at the street: if the valve is closed, open it; if there is water in the box or the meter is spinning with your house main closed, the service line has burst.
03Is no water an emergency?
Yes if it is only your house, because a burst service line is wasting water into the ground and can undermine the slab or driveway, and because a house cannot function without water. If the whole street is out, it is the utility's emergency, not a plumber's.
04What is a pressure regulator and why would it fail?
A valve near the main that reduces street pressure to a safe level for the house. They wear out after ten to fifteen years and can fail closed, which cuts the house to a trickle or nothing. Replacement is a short job.
05My water came back brown. Is that normal?
After an outage or a repair, sediment and air come through first. Run the cold taps, starting with an outside hose bib, until the water clears. If it stays discolored, call.
